About Our School

school entranceHart Street Elementary School is located in the west San Fernando Valley, and our campus serves approximately 1000 students. Our parents and community members are active participants through membership in our Title 1 and English Learner Councils, as well as our School Site Council, and School Based Management Council. We have approximately 40 classes in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5 including 7 classes servicing students with special needs. In addition, we are a School for Advanced Studies and offer a differentiated instructional program and open enrollment for qualified students.

Our teachers meet regularly in grade level teams to plan a comprehensive academic program which provides equal access to the standards based curriculum for all students. Extensive Professional Development opportunities are provided throughout the school year to insure that staff is well prepared to deliver a high quality academic program. Classroom approaches to instruction include the use of large and small group activities, cooperative learning, and peer tutoring. Our Teachers strive to increase student academically engaged time. Instruction is geared to address student multiple learning modalities, and a variety of instructional strategies are utilized. Homework support is provided to those students who participate in our L.A.'s BEST after school program and our Ready Set Go before school program.

Hart Street staff members have high expectations for all students in the areas of academic achievement, self esteem, and social responsibility. Our dedicated parents work closely with staff to insure that classroom needs are met. Our Parent/ Community Representative regularly schedules parenting classes. To further guarantee that our parents are active participants in the instructional program at Hart Street, we offer parent workshops presented by our math and literacy coaches. Our parents are also invited to attend the Math Night and Literacy Night to not only familiarize them with the district-mandated programs, but offer suggestions they can use in the home to assist their child's academic growth. Our school learning community and shared leadership is strengthened through our parents membership on our Title 1 and English Learners Advisory Committees as well our School Site Council and School Based Management Council.

Many projects have recently changed the physical look of our campus and have provided new learning areas for our students. Through 2 Kirk Douglas Grants and funds from the Neighborhood Matching Grants program we have provided 3 new play areas for our pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and special education preschoolers. A physical fitness course is available to grades 1-5 on our main playground. Reading lawns are now available for quiet activities at all grade levels. New murals and landscaping epitomize in the cultural diversity and background, and pride of Hart's multi-talented student body.

Hart Street School is always on the move. More changes to enhance the learning environment of our students are planned for the coming year. We hope that you will be a part of our commitment to make Hart Street Elementary School the best place for students to grow and learn.
